How I Came By The Map
Hosea took me out after a bear he'd spotted up along the Dakota River, back when we were still settling in at Horseshoe Overlook. Wasn't really about the bear, I don't think — not entirely. It was Hosea's way of teaching without making a lesson of it, same as always.
When it was done, he handed me a map of his own making, marked up with everywhere he reckoned the big, strange, old animals of this country kept themselves hidden. I've added to it since — my own hand next to his now. The full account is below, under the grizzly.
Hosea's Field Map

"If you're after exact coordinates, you've come to the wrong journal. I only ever
marked the general country a creature favored — never the precise ground it stood on.
There's a kind of man who wants everything found for him, laid out neat and easy.
I never had much use for that kind. Use this map for what it is — a place to start
looking — and do the rest of the finding yourself. Don't expect it handed to you
on a silver platter."
